Around year 2005, Koreanovelas were introduced to us, Filipinos. Jewel in the Palace, Full House, Endless love, and Boys over Flowers were some of the Koreanovelas we loved. We even became addicted to these shows and they somehow influenced our lives, too, but do we know something about their culture? I guess not. :) We were assigned to write something about one’s culture and I found Korean culture interesting.
Korean culture has continued many of the traditions that came into their culture generations ago and these very special characteristics made what Korea is today. Many of the people living in Korea today are related to the ancestors of the Mongolian Culture. Since the start of Korean culture, family has always been the most important thing.
The eldest in the house is believed to be the smartest, and therefore makes most of the decisions. Every relative in the family that is of the same blood is referred to as “ilga” which means one house. Special events are handed by the oldest living male.
A great deal of things happens when a Korean couple wishes to be married. Some marriages are still arranged. This is common in the upper class society of Korea. It is said that social standing is very important in Korea.
When it comes to fashion, many people are seen wearing jackets all year round and as the climate changes, they either add padding or take some away. People of any gender could be seen wearing pants. However, some women prefer wearing skirt and men choose to wear vest instead of a jacket. White and light blue are the most common colors of Koreans.
Korea is also known for its strong spices. Korean people enjoy flavoring their food with red peppers or garlic. They love sports, too. Wrestling is one of the popular sports there.
Life, death, and their relatives are very important to them and we can see this in their everyday life.
Their culture is indeed wonderful just like the culture of other countries. If given the chance, I want to explore more of this and see them for myself. :)
